The Badger Who Knows the Rocks
Grufford works near South Ferry Landing, where he offers navigation services to boats making their way through the more troublesome waters of the Silverbend. He knows where the rocks lie beneath the surface and how to guide a vessel safely around them.
He is a solid, imposing figure, usually found near the end of his dock. When the day is quiet, he may retreat to his hammock, although Grufford never seems entirely unaware of what is happening along the river.
Grufford can be difficult to read. He keeps his own counsel, watches more than he says, and has a habit of making ordinary moments seem just a little suspicious.
Marlowe learns that a river guide notices much more than currents and hidden rocks. Grufford sees who passes the landing, who arrives unexpectedly, and which quiet signals may mean something to the right observer.
