The Fox Who Studies the River’s Past
Julian Foxworth arrives in Riverpost as a scholar and historian studying the ways the river used to be managed. Tall and elegant, with fur the color of autumn leaves, he wears a silk vest, spectacles, and the polished smile of someone accustomed to making a fine impression.
He takes Room Four at the Willow Inn, surrounding himself with old books, parchment-like scrolls, maps, a silver compass, and pages written in his perfect, flourishing hand.
Julian’s knowledge of Riverpost history is impressive, particularly when the conversation turns to the old Red Wax Society. His voice remains smooth and controlled, although there is sometimes something cold beneath his careful courtesy.
Marlowe begins to wonder why a visiting scholar knows so much about secret symbols, forgotten ledgers, and the power once held along the river. Julian may be studying the past, but his interest in it is anything but ordinary.
